Waiting on Wednesday #42

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event splotlighting upcoming releases that we readers are eagerly anticipating and is hosted by Breaking the Spine.

Shutter
by Courtney Alameda
Publication Date: February 3, 2015

From Goodreads:

Horror has a new name: introducing Courtney Alameda.

Micheline Helsing is a tetrachromat—a girl who sees the auras of the undead in a prismatic spectrum. As one of the last descendants of the Van Helsing lineage, she has trained since childhood to destroy monsters both corporeal and spiritual: the corporeal undead go down by the bullet, the spiritual undead by the lens. With an analog SLR camera as her best weapon, Micheline exorcises ghosts by capturing their spiritual energy on film. She's aided by her crew: Oliver, a techno-whiz and the boy who developed her camera's technology; Jude, who can predict death; and Ryder, the boy Micheline has known and loved forever.

When a routine ghost hunt goes awry, Micheline and the boys are infected with a curse known as a soulchain. As the ghostly chains spread through their bodies, Micheline learns that if she doesn't exorcise her entity in seven days or less, she and her friends will die. Now pursued as a renegade agent by her monster-hunting father, Leonard Helsing, she must track and destroy an entity more powerful than anything she's faced before . . . or die trying.

Lock, stock, and lens, she’s in for one hell of a week.

January 2015 Releases

It's a new year, which means a whole new batch of debut authors for the year! Most importantly, though, it's a whole new year of books to add to my to read list. And, hopefully, to catch up a little on the books I still have to read. The list just gets bigger and bigger and I. Can't. Keep. Up. lol

With that here's my January list, the first list of highly anticipated books of 2015.

Reborn (Altered #3) by Jennifer Rush
1/6/15

Why -> I LOVED the first two books in this trilogy and can't wait to see what happens in this final installment. I'm curious to see what things are like now and what is going on with Nick. I don't want to give too much away if you haven't yet read the first two books. If you haven't yet read them, go read them now. Jennifer Rush definitely keeps you turning the pages and not wanting to put them down.

Die Once More (Revenants #3.5) by Amy Plum
1/6/15

Why -> Gah!!! I can't wait! Another short for the Die for Me Trilogy, and it's Jules, after the ending of the final book in the trilogy! I loved Jules, so much. He's such a great character and I so want to see him happy. I want his happy ending. Amy Plum made my day when I heard she had another short story coming out from his POV.

The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall
1/13/15

Why -> As I was reading the blurb on Goodreads there was one line that really hooked me: "Forbidden love and code-breaking, masked balls and explosions, destiny and dark secrets collide in this romantic thriller, in the vein of a YA DaVinci Code." Seriously I can't describe this book blurb better than that. It looks so good.

When by Victoria Laurie
1/13/15

Why -> The whole idea of being able to know when another person dies, but not know how or why is strangely, morbidly, interesting to me. Maddie is able to do just that. It isn't until her dad dies that she and her mother figure out what the numbers on everyone's foreheads she's seen her whole life truly mean. Her alcoholic mother uses Maddie's "tallent" for money. After all, there are lots of desperate people out there who want to know how much time they have left. Even if Maddie can't tell them how. After a client's young son goes missing on the exact date Maddie has told them he'd die, she's thrust in the middle of a police investigation. I have the arc for this one and as soon as I finish this month's book club read I'm going to devour this one. I can't wait!

Unleashed (Unremembered #2.5) by Jessica Brody
1/13/15

Why -> I honestly haven't read the blurb yet, because it's the short that comes after the second book, Unforgotten, that I still need to read. I really enjoyed the first book, Unremembered. So I'm looking forward to reading this entire trilogy and the accompanying short stories, soon.

A Cold Legacy (The Madman's Daughter #3) by Megan Shepherd
1/27/15

Why -> If you don't like creepy dark books, then you won't like these. I loved the first book, The Madman's Daughter. I have yet to read the second book, Her Dark Curriosity. I've been purposely waiting for this final installment before I read the second. I really want to read them back to back. Yay!

Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles #3.5) by Marissa Meyer
1/27/15

Why -> I love, love, love this series. If you haven't read it, I highly suggest you put down whatever you're doing and get reading Marissa Meyer's books NOW! I'm not joking. They are some of my absolute favorites. I'm sure this will be interesting. I don't like Queen Levana, but finding out why she is the way she is surely will be intriguing.

What books are you excited for releasing in January 2015?

My Top "Fifteen" Reads of 2014

Last year I tried for a Top Ten list of my favorite reads in 2013, it turned into a Top Twelve. This year's list is longer. I had to really work to keep it at no more than fifteen. Even then I wound up adding three series. Yes, entire series. I couldn't help myself. And there were a ton more books that I really wanted to add to the list, that probably should have gone on the list as well. I was not about to do a top fifty, though - that would have been most of my reading list this year. Anyway, here's my Top Fifteen Reads of 2014 in alphabetical order of author's last name. I couldn't even bring myself to rank them.

Trial by Fire (Worldwalker #1) by Josephine Angelini
Release Date: September 2, 2014

Why -> I wasn't sure I would like this book right off. But I hung in there after the first couple of chapters and I was greatly rewarded. It had so much that was wonderful - alternate realities and witchcraft mainly. I can't wait for the sequel, Trail of Tears to release in 2015.

The Coventant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: November 2, 2013 (for Sentinel)

Why -> Ah, I love Jennifer L. Armentrout's work. Like anything and everything she writes. I bought Half-Blood for my Kindle a while ago and just didn't read it until this year. And that was only because she was coming to town for a signing. Since then I've devoured most of everything she's written. I still have some to catch up on. After all these current ARCs I have piled up.

The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: August 5, 2014 (for Opposition)

Why -> The answer here is obviously it's JLA. And Daemon = total swoon worthy material. This was the first series of hers I read straight through and still my favorite. Possibly because, well Daemon and hot aliens. If you have not yet read this series I highly suggest you do so, like, yesterday. You won't be sorry.

City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments #6) by Cassandra Clare
Release Date: may 27, 2014

Why -> I love this series, and I was so upset when I found out how long it was going to be before we got to read the ending. Clare did not disappoint in this final book to the Mortal Instruments Series. I can't wait for her other Shadow Hunter books to come out, starting in 2015, I think. Must read series is you haven't already.

Add it on Goodreads

The Shadow Prince (Into the Dark #1) by Bree Despain
Release Date: March 11, 2014

Why -> Oh my goodness. I really do enjoy all of the Hades stories out there, but this was by far one of my favorite spins on that myth. I thought I liked Despain's first trilogy, The Dark Devine, but found that I like this one much much more. I can't wait to read the next two books in this trilogy.

Add it on Goodreads

Follow Me Through Darkness (The Boundless Trilogy #1) by Danielle Ellison
Release Date: October 21, 2014

Why -> I got to read this one as an ARC and was so excited for it to release and have others read it. I loved the story, the mystery, and the twists involved. Really really good. I can't wait for the next book to release in 2015.

Add it on Goodreads

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Release Date: January 10, 2012

Why -> I don't know why I waited so long to read this. Oh wait, yes I do. I didn't want my heart ripped out. Thanks a lot, John. I read the book right before the movie came out. I laughed at the first half of both, and cried like a baby for the last half. I was a wreck. If you haven't read or seen the movie, you must. I know, I'm cruel to suggest tearing your heart out, but it's worth it. Really worth it.

Six Feet Over It by Jennifer Longo
Release Date: August 26, 2014

Why -> I read this as an ARC and was intrigued before I ever read it just because of the fact that Leigh's father buys a cemetery, where they now live. And sixteen year old Leigh sells graves when she's not in school. To this day I cannot drive past a cemetery without laughing about Leigh and the ending of the book. She's a strong character who grows so much and the turn her life takes as a result of her father's mid-life-crisis-buy-a-cemetery break down. You have to read this one.

Wait For You Series by J. Lynn
Release Date: September 23, 2014 (for Stay With Me)

Why -> J. Lynn is a pseudonym for Jennifer L. Armentrout, for her new adult contemporary books. So naturally, I love these books. If you love her ya books, you'll more than likely love these as well. There are three more books slated for the series, and each one takes on a different couple, so it's not like you're dying to find out if they get together or not when the story ends. You have closure, unlike most ya books. Anyway, read them.

Add them on Goodreads

Sweet Unrest by Lisa Maxwell
Release Date: October 8, 2014

Why -> Oh my heart! I read this one as an ARC as well, and OMG it was so good. I cried. Again. Another tear jearker book, but it was so freaking good. Lucy and Alex (insert a sigh with his name). Here's a quick dish on why you should read it: New Orleans, an old plantation, voodoo, ghosts, and an epic love story.

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer
Release Date: February 4, 2014

Why -> If you have not yet picked up the first book in this series you must do so. The buzz about them is worthy. I devour these books in no time. As a result I will read anything by Marissa Meyer in the future. They are awesome. Fairytales set in the future, and sci-fi. They are the best!

Add it on Goodreads

Suspicion by Alexanra Monir
Release Date: December 9, 2014

Why -> I just finished this book the other week as a ARC and it released on December 9th. It was such a good mystery and I totally did not see that twist at the end coming. I was pleasantly surprised and I really liked Imogen's story. I'm hoping there could be, like, a companion novel, eventually. Maybe from Sebastian Stanhope's POV. *cough* *cough* *wink* *wink*

Add it on Goodreads

After the End (After the End #1) by Amy Plum
Release Date: may 6, 2014

Why -> Amy Plum tore me to bits with the ending of this one. The sequel cannot come soon enough for me. Seriously, if you've read this one then you know why I'm foaming at the mouth to get my hands on After the Beginning. Such a great book.

Add it on Goodreads

Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky #3) by Veronica Rossi
Release Date: January 28, 2014

Why -> I loved this trilogy so very very much. Perry and Aria were so much fun to read. While I loved this final instalment in their story I'm so sad that it's over. I wanted more of them. And I loved that Rossi also did short stories from Roar and Brooke's POVs. I can't wait to read her next ya project, Riders in 2016.

Add it on Goodreads

Easy (Contours of the Heart #1) by Tammara Webber
Release Date: November 6, 2012

Why -> I kept seeing this book mentioned around the web and when I got into a serious new adult reading binge I picked it up. I'm so glad I did. And then I read Breakable, the sequel and loved it just as much. If you like new adult contemporary then you will love this one as well. I'm sort of sad that there aren't any other books with Jacqueline and Lucas. This is one of those books that I wish I could have the experience of reading it for the first time again and again, but alas that's not to happen since I've read it.

December 2014 Releases

Like last month there aren't a lot of books on the list this month. Which is a good thing, since I'm still catching up on books from, well, the last two years. And I have a pile of eARCs on my iPad. Well, a figurative pile at least. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season, and try to sneak in lots of reading.

Wicked (The Wicked Saga #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Suspicion by Alexandra Monir
12/9/14

And haunting her are her father's last words, "There's something hidden in the Maze." The very maze she was never allowed in as a child. I'm currently reading this as an ARC and can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Rebound (Boomerang #2) by Noelle August
12/9/14

Only in this installment we get to follow around Adam Blackwood, head of Boomerang, and Alison Quick, Ethan's ex-girlfriend & the daughter of a business tycoon. When a scandal from Adam's past threatens to destroy everything he's built, Alison is there ready to take him down to prove her place in her father's world. Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event splotlighting upcoming releases that we readers are eagerly anticipating and is hosted by Breaking the Spine.

The Return (Titan #1)
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication Date: February 17, 2015

From Goodreads:

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody – which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to “puree”. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of an ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Book 1 in the new adult paranormal TITAN series, spin-off to the best selling COVENANT series. Seth's Story.

November 2014 Releases

I have very few books I'm excited about this month. It always seems that November and December are slow months for great book releases. But here's my November list.

Everblaze (Keeper of the Lost Cities #3) by Shannon Messenger
11/4/14

Why -> I really enjoyed the first book in this MG trilogy. I meant to read the second book last year, but never got around to it. So I was thinking, "Yay! Now I get to read the final two books back to back, no wait!" But then I realized that there is now a fourth book in the series. I just don't think I can wait for the fourth book, so I'm thinking I'll read books two and three soon and then wait for the fourth one next year.

A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird #1) by Claudia Gray
11/4/14

Why -> I really really like Claudia Gray's work. I've only read her Spellcaster books, but I have all of her Evernight Series on my shelf waiting. I really need to read them, like yesterday. Anyways, this book looks so good. A murder mystery tangled into parallel universes. I need this book.

Captive (#2) by Aimee Carter
11/25/14

Why -> I loved her The Goddess Test trilogy. I still have to read the first book in this trilogy, Pawn, but I will. Probably when the third book comes out.

What books are you excited for in November? I can't believe my list is this short. I have to have missed something.

Wicked (The Wicked Saga #1)
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication Date: December 8, 2014

From Goodreads:

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

The truth won't always set you free.

Less than a year ago, Neely Ambrose’s biggest worry was having the freedom to follow a path that wasn't chosen for her.

Less than a year ago, she believed she could trust the Elders who said they had everyone’s best interest at heart and who said they were keeping them safe from the outside.

Sixty days ago, she discovered what they had planned for everyone she loved—and that all of it centered around her.

Now she’s on the run through a dangerous wasteland full of killing machines, secret organizations, and people who want to sell her back to the Elders for their own safety. The whole world outside the Compound is living proof that everything in Neely’s life was a lie manufactured by the Elders, which may even include the boy she loves.

All Neely wants is the truth, but each new piece of it drives her further from what she thought she knew. With only forty days until everyone she loves falls under the Elders’ mind control, Neely must decipher who to trust, what questions to ask, and how to get one step ahead of the Elders, who will do anything to keep their secrets buried.

Author Bio

Danielle Ellison spent of her childhood reading instead of learning math. It's probably the reason she can't divide without a calculator and has spent her life seeking the next adventure. It's also probably the reason she's had so many different zip codes and jobs.

When she’s not writing, Danielle is usually drinking coffee, fighting her nomadic urges, watching too much TV, or dreaming of the day when she can be British. Danielle is also the author of SALT and STORM, a series about a snarky witch without magic. She has settled in Northern Virginia, for now, but you can always find her on twitter @DanielleEWrites.

Q.
Where did the idea for Follow Me Through Darkness come from? Was it hard to develop?

A.
It started with a line and a girl's voice in my head that was impossible to ignore. I had no direction for a long time, just her and all these pieces of a story that she kept telling me. I rewrote this book 8 times from beginning to end before I sold, so it was definitely hard to figure out. Once I had the story it didn't change much, but figuring out how to tell the story was the challenge. It's such a big and complicated world to capture!

Q.
I loved how you switched from where Neely is on her quest to the past. Was it like that from the beginning, or was it something that developed over time during the writing process?

A.
Thanks! I love that too! The flashbacks happened in rewrite 6. I couldn't get the story to work. I'd tried it linearly; I'd tried it in parts; It had a different opening chapter in every single revision up until 8. Then my friend said, "Try it in flashbacks," because the simplest things are never your own idea. So I did that, and it was instantly the right decision. Then making it all cohesive, in the right order, transition clearly was a whole different process.

Q.
The Cleaners are just plain creepy. Where did they come from? The thought of them gives me the chills!

A.
Yeah. Me too! They just sort of appeared in an early draft, and Neely was running from them. I didn't know what they were, just that she compared it to tornado sucking things up. I liked the concept. If you were trying to destroy everything, have a blank slate for life, I thought they should be terrifying yet something very possible. I made them work like vacuums programmed with one purpose: to remove anything and everything living. Once I had all that the options were limitless and they seamlessly wove into the background of the book and the history of her world.

Q.
What made you want to write young adult?

A.
In college I took writing classes and wrote a lot of short "literary" fiction. I loved writing but all my characters were teens. I didn't know YA was a thing(aside from Harry Potter & Twilight I'd never read any.) I also didn't do short well. Then, I started reading YA after college—and I was hooked! I loved everything about it. It made me feel so many things. I wanted to make people feel too. It gave me a place to express myself, to find myself, and I think that's what makes it so amazing. I may not always write only YA, but it will definitely always set the bar for me of excellent storytelling.

Q.
I've found that sometimes my favorite characters to write are not the protagonist. Which was your favorite character to write in Follow Me Through Darkness? I really liked Neely and Thorne, but I also found myself really wanting to know more about Xenith by the end.

A.
I'm with you! I obviously love Neely, as she's dominated four years (and counting) of my creative space, head & heart.

Thorne, though, he's surprising. That guy loves so fiercely and it makes him intriguing, but I've learned that there's more to him than people suspect. I know there's more than I had thought.

And Xenith! Xenith is something else. I think I enjoy writing him the most because I never know what he will do or say; he's the most fun to write.

Q.
What was the hardest thing about writing Follow Me Through Darkness

A.
Neely, in the beginning, was troublesome. She's an emotionally closed-off character—she has to be with all she's dealing with—so it took a while to break through all of that. I think it's worth it now and she's amazing, but it was difficult at first to get into her space. Once I got the story right and figured out how to tell it, I think the hardest part to get perfect was the countdown. The whole story) operates on a deadline, so counting down in military time while jumping around was super hard! We had an editor who just checked the timeline.

Q.
When will the next book in the Boundless trilogy be released? (Inquiring and impatient minds would love to know.)

A.
October 2015—which will fly by, right?

Q.
What other projects are you planning on for the future, if you can divulge that information?

A.
Besides the rest of the trilogy, I have a few things up my sleeve but nothing official. :)

Q.
Because I'm a huge reader and constantly looking for more books to devour, what are you currently reading?

A.
My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga, which is out in 2015.
