September 2014 Releases

I have a long list this month. This is both good and bad, because I'm excited for so many books, but there is just not enough time. I've hardly read any of the books released this year so far. I've read a lot of books from previous years, though.

Anyways, here's the list for this month.

Mortal Gods (Goddess War #2) by Kendare Blake
9/2/14

Why -> I haven't read Antigoddess yet, but it's sitting on my Kindle waiting patiently for me to read. It just looks so good and I have a feeling that I'll want to read this trilogy closer to the release of the third book. So I'm impatiently waiting for next year to read this one.

Trial by Fire (#1) by Josephine Angelini
9/2/14

Why -> OMG! I LOVED this book! I got an ARC from NetGalley and really loved this one. You can see my review here. And then go read it yourself. I can't wait for the next two books. Seriously foaming at the mouth here.

Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White
9/9/14

Why -> For starters this is Kiersten White and that should say enough. Add to it that it's billed as a cross between "Downton Abbey meets Cassandra Clare" and I'm definitely in. And there's magic involved. Yes, please!

The Perilous Sea (The Elemental Trilogy #2) by Sherry Thomas
9/16/14

Why -> Okay, I haven't read the blurb for this one, but I'm dying to read this trilogy. I bought the first book after seeing Sherry Thomas at last year's Texas Teen Book Festival and it's high up on my list of books to read. So yeah, this book is now up there as well. I'm torn between reading these two soon or waiting until the final book comes out next year. Decisions like this drive me nuts. lol

Hook's Revenge (Hook's Revenge #1) by Heidi Schulz
9/16/14

Why -> This looks like a great MG that I really can't wait to read. Jocelyn is Captain James Hook's daughter and she's eager to follow in her father's footsteps, but being a pirate isn't all she thought it would be. She's dealing with an untrained crew, cannibals, and rescuing her best friend from the lost boys. Not to mention Peter Pan, who drops in whenever he wants, uninvited of course.

Made for You by Melissa Marr
9/16/14

Why -> While recovering from a hit-and-run accident, Eva finds that she has a new skill - seeing people's deaths. With the help of her former flame, Nate, she uses her new talent to keep her friends alive while the killer becomes more desperate in getting Eva out of the picture all together.

Falls the Shadow by Stefanie Gaither
9/16/14

Why -> After Cate's sister dies her family picks up her sister's replacement. She looks identical to the sister Cate just lost, and even has her memories. But when her sister goes missing Cate goes in search, putting herself in the line of fire the closer to the truth she gets.

Rooms by Lauren Oliver
9/23/14

Why -> When the wealthy Richard Walker dies his house is left to his ex-wife Caroline and their children, Trenton and Minna. But they aren't alone in the house. Alice and Sandra haunt the house as well, watching the family. Their worlds collide when a new ghost arrives and Trenton begins communicating with her.

Tabula Rasa by Kristen Lippert-Martin
9/23/14

Why -> Sarah believes that she's undergoing a procedure that will erase her troubled past and render her a blank slate, giving her a new start. But when a teenage computer hacker tries bringing down the hospital she begins piecing together the reasons someone would want her erased. And she's not going to be silenced this time.

In a Handful of Dust (Not a Drop to Drink #2) by Mindy McGinnis
9/23/14

Why -> I have yet to read this blurb. I am waiting until the final book is release. I keep hearing that this a great read and my gut tells me to wait so I can devour all of the books back to back. Something I have really been enjoying this past year.

Salt and Storm by Kendall Kulper
9/23/14

Why -> Avery wants to be a witch so she can protect the whalers of Prince Island, but her mother has other plans for her. Ones that don't include magic at all and manners. After dreaming of her own murder she realizes time is running out and she needs to become a witch to save herself. And Tane, a sailor and unlikely ally, joins her quest to save her friends and herself. But the cost of becoming a witch might be too high for her.

Firebug by Lish McBride
9/23/14

Why -> Ava is a firebug, able to start fires with her mind, and she works for the Coterie (magical mafia). She hates her job and her boss, after all, he killed her mom. When she's told to kill a family friend she rebels and goes on the run with her friends, and attempts to keep the killing to a minimum.

Winterspell by Claire LeGrand
9/30/14

Why -> I love the cover for this one. Set in 1899, Clara has lead a double life since her mother's murder: the mayor's proper daughter and trained in self-defense by the mysterious Drosselmeyer. When her father is abducted by mysterious beings she sets off with Nicholas, the dethroned prince bound by a wicked curse, through Cane, a war-ravaged land.

Tabula Rasa
by Kristin Lippert-Martin

Publication Date: September 23, 2014

From Goodreads:

The Bourne Identity meets Divergent in this heart-pounding debut.

Sixteen-year-old Sarah has a rare chance at a new life. Or so the doctors tell her. She’s been undergoing a cutting-edge procedure that will render her a tabula rasa—a blank slate. Memory by memory her troubled past is being taken away.

But when her final surgery is interrupted and a team of elite soldiers invades the isolated hospital under cover of a massive blizzard, her fresh start could be her end.

Navigating familiar halls that have become a dangerous maze with the help of a teen computer hacker who's trying to bring the hospital down for his own reasons, Sarah starts to piece together who she is and why someone would want her erased. And she won’t be silenced again.

A high-stakes thriller featuring a non-stop race for survival and a smart heroine who will risk everything, Tabula Rasa is, in short, unforgettable.

Waiting on Wednesday #26

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event spotlighting upcoming releases that we readers are eagerly anticipating and is hosted by Breaking the Spine.
Falls the Shadow
by Stefanie Gaither

Publication Date: September 16, 2014

From Goodreads:

When Cate Benson was twelve, her sister died.

Two hours after the funeral, they picked up Violet’s replacement, and it was like nothing had ever happened. Because Cate’s parents are among those who decided to grant their children a sort of immortality—by cloning them at birth. So this new Violet has the same smile. The same laugh. That same perfect face. Thanks to advancements in mind-uploading technology, she even has all the same memories as the girl she replaced.

She also might have murdered the most popular girl in school.

Or at least, that’s what the paparazzi and crazy anti-cloning protesters want everyone to think: that clones are violent, unpredictable monsters. Cate is used to hearing all that, though. She’s used to standing up for her sister too, and she’s determined to prove her innocence now—at whatever the cost. But the deeper she digs for the truth, the further Cate's carefully-constructed life begins to unravel, unveiling a world filled with copies and lies, where nothing and no one—not even her sister— is completely what they seem.

In a pulse pounding debut, Stefanie Gaither takes readers on a nail-biting ride through a future that looks frighteningly similar to our own time and asks: how far are you willing to go to keep your family together?

Isabel's been cursed since the Middle Ages.

Desperate to escape an arranged marriage, she made a hasty bargain with a demon, asking for liberation from an oppressive husband-to-be and the excitement of travel. But the demon's "gift" came at a steep cost. Each time he moves her to a new city, her memory's wiped. No one can touch her bare skin without injury or even death. And she sees the lifespan of every living being (and is, in fact, immortal herself).

All a constant reminder that she's different than other teen girls.

But New Orleans seems to accept her as she is. She has friends and a real life in this quirky, hot city. Then Isabel meets Dominic, whose deep soul and strong character draw her to him. Her growing love gives her the courage to confront the demon, insisting the curse be broken. But the demon's price for freedom is much, much higher than she could possibly give.

Excerpt

“You okay?” Dominic asks me.

I look over at him. His brows are bunched together, his irises dark. He reaches a hand toward mine, then stops and pulls it back. I can’t interpret the look in his eyes.

Disappointment at his withdrawal creeps through my veins. “Yeah, I’m fine,” I say. Inside my head, I scoff at my stupidity. How quickly I forget who I am when I’m around him. I force my attention back to my paper. “Let’s just concentrate on our project.” My words have a strong bite to them, one I don’t try to hold back. It’s better this way, anyway.

He sighs, turning away from me.

For the rest of the period, we work in silence. Out of the corner of my eye, I see him writing furiously.

I wish I could say I’m productive, but my mind is blocked. No words will pour from my pen. I feel mute, silenced by my own emotions, by the heat from his body that warms my side. The soft scratching sound of him writing on his paper is absorbing, and I close my eyes and just listen, shutting out the world around me. Opening up my heart for one moment in the only safe way I know.

The bell rings, jarring me out of my fog. I gather my books and stand quickly, edging away from my desk.

Dominic grabs my hand.

The gesture stops me in my tracks. The warmth from his palm seeps through my glove, absorbs into my skin, fuses with my cells and tiny hairs and molecules and veins.

I turn to face him.

He rises from his seat, still gripping me. “Please don’t run from me anymore,” he asks, his voice raw. His eyes are wide, piercing mine with a tiny sliver of hurt and...some other emotion. It seems a little familiar, but I can’t quite figure it out at the moment. I’m too distracted by the sensory overload of him.

“I’m sorry,” I say, pouring earnestness into my voice.

He shakes his head slowly. His eyes swirl with shades of blue, and he peers down at me with no disguise or veil to protect himself. In this moment, I can see everything inside him. I recognize that emotion in his gaze as desire.

Desire—for me.

The air whooshes from my lungs. The stirrings of my own longing match his, slamming to the surface of my skin in a heated fervor. My pulse speeds up.

“No more apologies, Isabel,” he says, then loosens his grip on my imprisoned hand, his thumb sliding down the center of the covered palm.

I shiver at the sensation, exhaling a shaky breath. “I... Okay.” I can barely think, barely move. I am captured, locked in a state of perfect being. Frozen in one perfect moment.

“Read this,” he says, pressing a folded paper into my hand.

And then, he’s gone. I remain in my spot for a moment, holding on to this feeling.

Tucking it safely away in my mind, where I can experience it over and over again for as long as possible. I force myself to take several slow breaths to focus my mind, slip the note into my pocket for when I can read it in privacy. Then I head to my next class, carrying secret thoughts of Dominic with me.

Excerpt

English class. I can’t stop my eyes from sliding casually across the room every few minutes to stare at Dominic. He has one lock of hair that flops onto his forehead. For some reason, my fingers itch to push it off his face.

When was the last time I touched another person? I can barely remember what it’s like. Even a small gesture, like brushing the small hairs on someone’s arms with the tips of my fingers, is forbidden to me.

Dominic looks up from his notebook at that moment. I tear my gaze away, cheeks flaming from almost being caught staring, and turn my attention back to my assignment. We’re supposed to be working on a poem, which is usually one of my favorite activities. For some reason, I’m having a hard time concentrating.

Okay, I know why. But it doesn’t matter. I’m not going to think about him or our talk in the library. I’m going to finish this poem. I’m going to finish school today. And then I’m going to retreat to the sanctuary of my apartment, where I can shed these layers of clothes and be free of my constraints, if only for a little while.

I reread what I’ve written so far:

Alone on a shore, I am swallowed

By a stillness, body

Bowed over, hair like a tree willow.

I skim the water surface

With my fingertips, as

Sand engulfs my feet, my ankles, my calves.

The water licks

Closer—

Sighing shores beckon me

To dance upon the swirling currents.

I can feel Dominic looking at me. Emboldened, I lift my eyes and stare right into his. The blue of his irises remind me of the body of water in my poem. Dark. Tempting. Heavy with an unspoken awareness.

Everything falls silent except the rush of blood in my ears.

The rest of the poem’s words come to me out of nowhere, and I spill them out onto my paper:

I close my eyes,

Fall into my escape, where

The tide’s fingers

Drag out my air.

Tug me closer,

Fill me,

Absorb me—

I gasp I freeze

I am no longer alone.

The bell rings, jarring me out of my hypnotized state. I slip my poem into my notebook and stay seated, waiting for the room to empty before I leave to go to my next class. Girls cling together in tight groups, laughing and talking to each other as they pour through the doorway into the hall.

I stay back and watch.
